ETYEK-BUDA (HUNGARY)

Once the winegrowing region surrounding Buda comprised the vineyards stretching from Szentendre to Tétény on the mountains and hills along the bank of the Danube.

Inhabited as early as in the prehistoric times, this area was divided into four main regions: the vineyards of Szentendre, vineyards of Buda (in the vicinity of Óbuda and Sashegy), vineyards of Promontor and the vineyards of Tétény. Under the rule of the kings of the House of Árpád, viticulture had already flourished and served as the main source of income for the locals. Many Serbs settled in this area, which resulted in the dominance of red wine production following the Turkish invasion. The Buda-Sashegyi Kadarka wine, made from Black Kadarka, earned a reputation throughout Europe. As a consequent of the wars devastating this area, the vineyards became scarce. Of the 572 vineyard owners in Promontor listed in the roster of 1736 through 1741, 309 bore a German-like name, demonstrating yet another evidence of the planned settling of the area with Germans. The abovementioned list included only 50 Hungarian names besides the 192 Serbs. With cheap transportation provided by the waterway of the Danube, large cellars, most of which are still in operation, were put up to store the wines. In the second half of the 18th century, vine stock plantings became common in Promontor and its surroundings. The number of permanent local residents increased year by year with no villein by then poor enough not to own a vineyard of some size at least.  Beginning the end of the century, mainly in the areas of Promontor and Kistétény, it became fashionable with the bourgeoisie of Buda and Pest, who leased vineyards, to frequent cellars, which resulted in a rather thriving cellar cult.

Wine consumption customs were about to change as well. Around 1830, city dwellers were in favor of white wines rather, compelling the countryside surrounding  Buda to propagate an increasing number of white wine grape varieties. In 1890, the region was gravely hit by the phylloxera which ruined the plantings almost completely. The revival of viticulture as expected failed to come about due to the introduction of planting stone-fruits. These orchards gradually took over the vineyards. The region of Etyek followed similar path in its history with the exception that the vineyards of the Vál Valley domain has earned prestige thanks to the modernization and innovation that took place in the mid-nineteenth century. The winegrowing hills of Pákozd, Sukoró, Nadap and Velence produced high quality white wines. In the late 1800’s, the environs of Etyek were site to the production of the white wine used for the famous sparkling wines by the Törley family.

Due to the unique ecological conditions: soils with high lime contents and the geographical properties of vast plateaus, locally grown grapes are usually healthful. This area grows wines with high acid contents; an ideal base for sparkling wines. Winegrowing has prevailed thanks to the favorable economical circumstances. The region totals 1, 772 hectares.
