The winegrowing areas of Tuscany are situated in the western coastal region of Central Italy, covering some 23, 000 square kms, including its offshore isles such as the island of Elba, among others.
Tuscany is one of the most scenic winegrowing regions in Italy as well as it is ranked at the top amongst the oldest ones in entire Europe. This area is a marriage of mountains intermingled far and wide with hills and valleys separated by greens of picturesque forests. Tuscany's wine production traces its roots back to the Chianti area where as early as in the Etruscan times grapes were cultivated in a systematic manner. Nowadays, winegrowing in Tuscany shows an increasing tendency to concentrate on the hill country while a withdrawal from the planes has been on the rise correspondingly . The center of the region is Florence. Although the Chianti area accounts for one third of the entire region of Tuscany, in addition to the Chianti, this region is known for numerous other renowned wines produced locally such as Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Monetepulciano, Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
