ARGENTINA
Following 15 years of economic regression, Argentina now comprises 200 thousand hectares of winegrowing regions. With a 20-million hectare production, Argentina ranks the fifth largest winegrower area of the World, with a production typically focusing on the quantity though. As far as the export is concerned, Argentina lags behind the competition of the Old World: merely 5 % of all Argentine wines are sold overseas. Mendoza, a province blessed with vast vineyards, alone totals two thirds of the wine producing areas in Argentina. Malbec ranks first among the most common varietals, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera varieties. In addition, Bonarda, Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Grenache, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc varietals are also commonly grown. Without the shadow of a doubt, it is the Malbec variety that produces the highest quality wine in this region. |
